The Dutch Community for Synthetic Cell Research
About SynCellNL
The SynCellNL community connects the leading projects and scientists from the Netherlands in the field of synthetic cell research. Our common aim is to understand how cells work by reproducing their cellular mechanism at molecular level. It is a huge interdisciplinary research effort that requires expertise e.g. from chemistry, physics, biology, AI. Additionally our community includes experts in ethics and RRI. Together we are tackling the challenge of creating the world’s first synthetic cell. Such a groundbreaking advancement holds the potential for sustainable biotechnology and biomedicine, leading to a major positive impact on society.
Any project involved in synthetic cell research is welcome to join our community. At this moment EVOLF and BaSyC are our main projects.
EVOLF is the most recent chapter in the history of the synthetic cell research community in the Netherlands. It builds upon BaSyC, the first Dutch national research programme to build a synthetic cell, started in 2017.
Our community brings together researchers from top universities and institutes across the Netherlands
Prof. Marileen Dogterom
Currently this initiative is led by the daily management teams of the BaSyC/ EVOLF consortia which consist of:
Dr. Stephania Usai
Prof. Cees Dekker
Prof. Gijsje Koenderink
