BaSyC (Building a Synthetic Cell) is a Dutch research programme that seeks to advance our understanding of the fundamental principles of life by building a synthetic cell from the bottom up.
Rather than modifying existing living cells, BaSyC aims to create an autonomous, self-reproducing cell through the integration of molecular building blocks. This bottom-up approach provides a unique platform to investigate how life emerges from non-living components and to uncover the molecular mechanisms that underlie cellular life.
Launched in 2017 as a 10-year programme BaSyC brings together 17 leading researchers from the fields of physics, chemistry, and biology, across six prominent Dutch research institutions:

The programme is supported by a Gravitation grant from the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), as well as by the participating institutions.
Through this multidisciplinary collaboration, BaSyC advances fundamental knowledge in synthetic biology while contributing to scientific, technological, and societal discussions about nature and future of life.
