Activities
BaSyC organizes a variety of consortium-wide activities that foster collaboration, knowledge exchange, and community building, with special attention to the development of its ~ 65 PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers.
Besides the half-yearly consortium meetings, BaSyC organized workshops, seminars, onboarding activities for new staff members, and a summer school.
To address these challenges, researchers collaborate across six interconnected research lines covering: system modelling, cell fuelling, DNA processing, cell division, spatio-temporal integration, and synthetic cell autonomy. In parallel, BaSyC includes a dedicated research line on Philosophy, Ethics and Public Debate, which explores the societal, ethical, and philosophical implications of creating synthetic life and promotes dialogue with researchers, stakeholders, and the wider public.
BaSyC organised various community and training events.
At the national level, BaSyC engaged in outreach activities, such as podcasts, science shows, Dutch Design Week and Dutch science festivals, like ‘Pint of Science’, ‘Weekend van de Wetenschap’ and ‘Expeditie NEXT’.
Internationally, BaSyC staff at all career stages play an active role in the European Synthetic Cell Initiative (SynCellEU) and contribute to major community events, including the annual SynCell Conference and collaborations with the global synthetic cell research community.
As from fall 2024, the BaSyC staff is joined by the staff of the EVOLF programme. Together, we now form one single community and jointly organise all meetings, workshops and activities.
